Gurutoy.com - Visual Search Engine 12.11.08

Gurutoy was an idea that Brad Suzuki had 3 years ago.  A way to give people a catalyst to find new and creative information visually.Brad had a tough time finding someone who could turn his vision into a reality.  This was until he met me.  After a month and a half of design and development Gurutoy.com is now live.  It has a clean yet vibrant interface, which puts the emphasis on the photos. The content is people powered, allowing users to have the say in what photos/visuals represents the sites they promote.

Gurutoy.com

About Gurutoy
The concept of Gurutoy emerged in December 2005. We wanted to construct a more organized way of searching that was fresh and new.
The idea was to create a virtual art gallery of website links that would be searchable thru keywords and phrases. All content will be uploaded by users. You tell us what you like out there on the internet. Another intention was to promote creativity, uploaded pictures can be anything deemed meaningful for attracting someone to click on to the site link.

Become a member and search other user’s favorite websites that they’ve uploaded. With Gurutoy, you can discover websites you never knew existed or reference back to your favorites. Gurutoy is meant to be a fun, easy way to search for websites, powered by the people to give search back to the people.

A complete overhaul on Madskill.com.  They had a site that was a bit dated, and wanted something fresh that showed off their humble spirit and their local flavor.

Stop the Violence - Teen 08.26.08
Sample

Domestic Violence Clearing House Honolulu needed a site to educate teens about domestic abuse. This was a tough project.  1 for the topic and 2 because teens have such small attention spans.  Not to mention all of the different ways people can be involved in abuse.  What we came up with was a youth oriented design, with a pretty cool “help a friend” feature.

Text anonymous abuse information to your friends:  You simple put in your friends, parent, family members cell phone number, and we send a message with the subject “Abuse is not normal…you don’t have to deal with it”.  The message would contain the process of getting help, as well as contact information to call and get face to face help through the organization.

This project was fullfilling and I hope it helps a lot of teens in Hawaii.

Another aspect of the project was to create a cohesive flow between where the teens are to where the help information is.  So we created them a myspace profile page, that matched the design of the new site.

Feed Blendr 08.26.08
Sample

Feedblendr.com lets you combine multiple feeds into one clean coded feed. Beau Lebens wanted a clean and easy to use interface for this web app.

Red was the color of choice by the client, and I created a very clean, web 2.0 ui. Below you can read a little bit more about Feedblendr.

FeedBlendr takes the feeds you give it, pulls the individual entries from each of them, attempts to sort them in date order (combined across all feeds) and then provides you with a new, blended feed of all entries. This system was written from the ground up using the programming language PHP. I’m also using MySQL to manage the feed information on the backend, and FeedBlendr is hosted on the wonderful DreamHost. Oh, and the subscribe page uses the icons from Feed Icons and OPML Icons. The blog, this page, Tips and Contact are all managed using the wonderful, open-source blogging engine WordPress.

In case you were wondering, my name (the guy who made this) is Beau Lebens. My main website is Dented Reality, and I do all sorts of projects like this one. This visual interface of this site was designed by my good friend Ray Hernandez and coded up by me in my spare time (around my day-job, which takes up way too many hours in the day).

My Baby Our Baby 08.25.08
Sample

Sure, plenty of other sites allow parents to create online scrapbooks and keepsake photo albums, but no other site makes it easier for busy parents to collect and organize memories from invited family members and friends.

In today’s world, almost everyone has images gathering dust on their hard drives. Instead of devoting hours to tracking all these images and memories down on your own, let us help you with the legwork. You’ll end up with tons of memories you didn’t even know you had – and a whole lot more time for creating new ones.

So how do two childless guys end up founding an Internet company that’s all about babies?

Good question. Several years ago, the founders of MyBabyOurBaby found themselves surrounded by friends and colleagues embarking upon the wild journey known as parenthood. Labeled “Internet guys” by everyone they knew, Beau and Ray were constantly being asked to help with “doing online stuff” so the many new parents in their lives could show off their brand new, little people.

Then Ray had a stroke of genius (which he’ll tell you is a pretty common occurrence): Why not just create one web site where everyone can capture memories and easily share them with friends and family? Proving that chronic laziness can result in giant leaps for mankind, the two “Internet guys” quickly realized that creating one really awesome site would mean they wouldn’t have to keep creating new sites for every newborn baby they met.

Born in 2006, the idea for MyBabyOurBaby grew, slowly at first, from a casual project between two friends into the fully functional, feature-rich service you see today. Today, MyBabyOurBaby allows its members to showcase their memories in an interactive, collaborative space that grows and changes right along with the kids that are its inspiration.

The focus has been – and always will be – to help parents collect all kinds of memories in one safe, easy-to-use location that they can share with family and friends.

We hope you enjoy using MyBabyOurBaby as much as we enjoyed creating it.
